Hawk Mountain Inn and Resort features a wide range of outdoor activities yet stays true to its motto “Where privacy is the ultimate luxury”. When the great waters and our instructors combined with luxury accommodations, fine dining, full service spa, indoor and outdoor pool, the Fly Fishing School at Hawk Resort is the place to learn or improve your technique.

You may have seen the fly fishing photos, tv ads, or perhaps read the books. Then wondered... Can I do that? Yes! You can learn to create the graceful curl of fly line at the Fly Fishing School at Hawk Resort where our focus is training beginners. We focus on a low student to teacher ratio which allows the students to build skill rapidly.

The Fly Fishing School at Hawk maintains extensive fly-fishing programs geared toward all ages and abilities and is located directly on the Black River, with nearly two miles on Hawk property. Beginners can obtain all the instruction they need from our expert instructors then test their skills. The School is committed to providing you with training needed to enjoy the Zen of fly fishing.

The main fishing pond is located adjacent to the Hawk Reception Center. Plenty of room around the pond allows for easy casting to energetic rainbow trout. For more of a challenge, grab a pair of waders and hike along the valley nature trails which run along the banks of the river. The Black River’s undercut banks, bends, riffles and deep holes with good-sized brown, brook and rainbow trout.

Family Fishing is also an intricate part of our recreation programs at Hawk. Let’s Go Fishing is a great program for children to learn to fish.

We also provide group classes and private lessons.

Our school is designed to provide special training to the first time fly fisher and support the experienced angler.

Fishing is close at hand with access to Hawk's two fully stocked ponds and nearly two miles of the Black River meandering through the 70-acre Hawk Nature Preserve. Our marina on Lake Amherst provides canoe and kayak rentals for access to lake and rainbow trout and small mouth bass. For more variety, the Fly Fishing School staff will direct you to some of the more popular fishing streams in the area, and even some hidden places that most visitors wouldn't even know about.

Experienced Anglers Support

Our problem solving program for experienced anglers is a unique one on one approach. Anglers take advantage of The Fly Fishing School at Hawk for a technique tune up, obtain local flies and determine what is biting and where.
