Attractions ~ Hawk's Guide to Vermont Shopping ~ Food Shopping in Vermont
Although Hawk will be more than happy to have the refrigerator and cupboards of your private villa fully stocked and ready for your arrival, many guests prefer to do their own shopping. Even though we're located high in the Green Mountains of Vermont, rest assured that you will be in the midst of some of the most lovingly concocted baked goods, organically raised fruits and vegetables and choicest meat and seafood available anywhere in the country. We'll prove to you that Vermont is not all maple syrup and Ben & Jerry's (not that we don't enjoy those too, of course). With the proper guidance, the region can become a gourmet's paradise. Therefore, Hawk has assembled some of our favorite places to shop in the hope that you too can appreciate the best that Vermont has to offer.
Hawk Particularly Recommends
Black River Produce, Proctorsville
A unique grocery store offering the largest selection of fresh fruits and vegetables in the Okemo Valley. Carrying specialty items from both Vermont and around the world, Black River Produce particularly excels with its seafood and bakery departments. Exploring the well-maintained displays of produce and other food items, you may also be shocked at the high quality of the flowers you can find here, even in the dead of winter. (802) 226-7480
Singletons' General Store, Proctorsville
Owned and operated by the same Vermont family since 1946, Singletons' is truly a local establishment. Once inside this general store/market, there is no mistaking that you are in the country. For, nowhere in the city can you do your dinner shopping, and at the same time pick-up all of your hunting and fishing gear. The store also cures its own high-quality meats and offers an extremely fine selection of fresh produce and wines. (802) 226-7666

Baba-A-Louis Bakery, Chester
Widely considered to be the best bakery in all of Vermont, Baba-A-Louis is the place to go for an incredible selection of pretty much every kind of homemade bread you can think of and probably a few kinds you haven't yet thought of. Also featuring a fantastic homemade granola and numerous freshly baked pastries, this bakery will tempt you with its irresistible aromas the moment you step inside. If you like what you see, don't forget to check out their cookbook, Baba-a-Louis Bakery Bread Book: The Secret Book of Bread by John McLure. (802) 226-7178
The Wine & Cheese Depot, Ludlow
A charming little shop near the center of town featuring over 250 wine labels, local and imported specialty cheeses, micro-brewed beers and gourmet food items. And if it's cigars you're looking for, the Depot is also one of the few places in the region where you can find a decent humidor. (802) 228-4128
Woodstock Farmers' Market, Woodstock
A couple of miles outside of town on the road to Hawk, you will pass by this rather unassuming-looking farmers' market. However, don't be deceived so easily - the inside of this place is quite a treat indeed. Stocked with gourmet foods and fresh produce from literally around the world, and featuring one of the best (and most eclectic) selections of prepared foods in all of Vermont, the Woodstock Farmers' Market is well worth your attention. While you're there, take particular note of Henry, the resident cat, who was the inspiration for the children's book, That Cat Is Not for Sale, by Frederick Lipp. (802) 457-2100
