Directions ~ To Hawk by Train ~ The Ethan Allen Express
From New York City to Rutland, Vermont, the Ethan Allen Express takes you through some of the Northeast's most sublime wilderness in only five hours. Spring and summer bring fields of wildflowers in the Hudson River Valley, while Fall brings colorful foliage in the Green Mountains - and, without having to keep your eyes on the road, you will have a great view of it all the way up to Hawk. Since many of Ethan Allen Express' winter riders are destined for the best skiing in the East, Amtrak offers special ski and baggage storage. Along the way, you can enjoy on-board regional menu specialties and Vermont microbrew beers. So, sit back, relax and let Amtrak take you to Central Vermont.
The Bottom Line: If you live or work in New York, the Ethan Allen is definitely the best way to go by rail; it's faster than the Vermonter, seems to run on a more convenient schedule and offers the nicest views.
Hawk Tips:
When you board the Ethan Allen Express in Penn Station, we suggest that you sit on the "driver's" side, or left-hand side, of the train as it heads north. This will assure you of the best views as the train follows the banks of the Hudson River all the way to Albany. (Conversely, you should sit on the "passenger's" side, or right-hand side, of the train as it heads back south to New York.) We also suggest that you consider purchasing Custom Class seating on the Ethan Allen Express, particularly during holiday periods and weekends... you won't be left scrambling for a seat, as all Custom Class seating is guaranteed. With this upgrade, you will also receive complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and roomier seating in a quieter atmosphere for what amounts to a nominal fee.
