Recreation ~ Fall Activities

When autumn turns the Vermont countryside into a spectacular tapestry of colors, an invigorating briskness invades and the outdoors beckon...

In autumn, the mountain air turns crisp and the emerald peaks don the brilliant shades of another breathtaking leaf season. Ripened apples fall from the trees and are quickly gathered for the cider presses. Pumpkins appear at roadside farmers' markets and leaf-peepers take to the hills for a glimpse at nature's fierce, passionate battle enacted among the trees.

The Vermont fall colors are spectacular

Amid all of nature's winter preparations, Hawk guests find autumn to be the ideal time to explore the foliage from within, on miles of wooded hiking trails that lace the Resort's 1,200 acres, or to catch a few last rounds of mountain golf on one of seven area championship courses. Quiet, leaf-strewn country roads winding through the wooded peaks and valleys prove ideal for biking and jogging. Others may prefer to hunt for game or treasured antiques at country fairs and shops in the surrounding towns and villages.

Out on Lake Amherst, the mountainsides lining the shores will appear ablaze in hues of red, orange and yellow, while kayaks from the Hawk Marina are propelled past falling leaves as fall winds carry the leaves to their final resting places. Canoes and kayaks are paddled up the Black River among some of these floating remnants of nature's rotational cycle. Deep into the heart of Hawk's 70-acre Nature Preserve these paddlers will find some of Vermont's best late-season fly-fishing. Nearby to the Preserve, tennis in the mountain air on Hawk's outdoor courts proves wonderfully refreshing for those who prefer to stick to drier land.

By late-autumn, winter sports enthusiasts who just can't wait for school vacation week have already hit the slopes of Okemo and Killington for some early-season downhill skiing and snowboarding. Fall also marks the start of the traditional holiday seasons, and few places are as warm and inviting as Hawk for those special family homecomings.
